The Maldivian government has begun efforts with the World Bank to establish an unemployment insurance benefit scheme for unemployed people in the Maldives.

Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer signed the agreement on behalf of the government while Country Director for Maldives Faris Hadd-Zavos signed the agreement on behalf of the World Bank.

Under the project, the World Bank will provide technical and financial assistance to the Maldives in providing employment-related services through a single network.

As part of this effort, the Job Centre established at the Economic Ministry will be expanded to facilitate easy access to services for the public. Job centres will provide training to develop the skills of individuals.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development and the Pension Administration Office. The project will be carried out by 2027.
