The Maldives Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday evening said that this was not the time to put forth personal aims or gun for presidency.
Nasheed, who is the leader and a primary founder of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had made the comment via a tweet moments after Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced his intention to contend in the upcoming 2023 presidential election.
The Speaker claimed that instead of putting forth personal agendas, this was the time to prioritize the economic recovery of the island nation.
He further stressed that the government need to seek remedy for the foreign exchange reserve and to ensure safety of the country's citizens.
President Solih, who stepped in front of the media after months, revealed his aspirations for a second term while stressing on the importance of MDP forming a coalition to bag the win in the 2023 elections.
Solih's affirmation for a second term run comes almost immediately after Parliament's Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, who is Nasheed's cousin, had earlier announced Nasheed's decision to run for presidency.
Meanwhile, the in-fighting of the ruling party that had intensified during the party's Chairperson election may once again resurface between the factions.
