High Commission of Maldives in Sri Lanka urges Maldivians in Sri Lanka to exercise caution in areas where the locals are protesting against the government over the current economic crisis in the nation.

The country is facing shortages in basic necessities as well as a hike in fuel prices due to the economic crisis it is currently at. It has sparked a series of protests all over the country, some leading to violence and injury.

In a Facebook post, the High Commission said in romanized Dhivehi that protest goers and citizens have been getting injured at these protests.

They have urged all Maldivians practice caution when going out to public places and to carry their passports as well.

In a protest held in a town called Rambukkana on Tuesday, at least one person was killed when police opened fire. Twenty seven others were injured at this protest.

Sri Lankan Police has said they opened gunfire to remove the protesters that had blocked the Rambukkana railway crossing since Tuesday morning. Police also said the protestors were attempting to set an oil tanker on fire before they opened gunfire.
