Prices of lemon surged extravagantly in recent weeks ahead of the Islamic sacred month of Ramadan, owing to insufficient availability and spiking demands.
With news of Bangladeshi lemon meeting a lukewarm reception at the Maldivian market, the commotion around the vendors' market dissipated on Monday, 03rd April, after it was confirmed that Vietnam imported lemon were back on the market.
The abrupt availability in lemon from a popular exporter has resulted in a significant price deflation for lemon.
The scarcity for the popular lemon produce rose when major shipments of the Vietnamese produce met with an unprecedented delay in arrival to the Maldives.
Initially shipments of lemon were expected for 30th March, however the shipments arrived on 31st March; which did not get cleared from the commercial harbor for the following two days due to both Friday and Saturday being public holidays.
Meanwhile, major vendors and wholesalers have already confirmed on notable drops of lemon prices in local market.
Reports confirm that lemon were sold as high as MVR140 per kilogram on 02nd April, which had however gone down between MVR110 to MVR120 per kilogram by Monday, 03rd April 2022.
