Maldives to quarantine unvaccinated travellers

Maldives will start implementing a mandatory quarantine of two weeks for people arriving to Maldives if they have not completed two doses of the vaccines against Covid-19.

The new change will be implemented starting Monday. Tourists and children under the age of 12 will not have to undergo mandatory quarantine even if they have not received two doses of the Covid vaccine.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) is strengthening the precautionary measures in light of the highly contagious Covid-19 variant, Omicron.

Omicron variant had been identified in Maldives in the beginning of this month as. A subsequent risk assessment completed showed that Maldives was a “high risk” nation as Omicron became more dominant.

This mandatory quarantine will be applicable to Maldivians that have not completed both doses in addition to foreign work permit holders as well.

A negative PCR test at the end of the 14 day quarantine will be needed for release from quarantine.

Additionally a PCR negative test from a sample taken 96 hours prior to entry is now mandatory for all incoming travellers to Maldives as well. Children under the age of one is exempted from this rule.

These changes will be implemented until otherwise announced.

HPA said all relevant authorities will have to abide these changes and call on Maldivians to follow the new rules as well.

Maldives banned travel from seven countries on November 28 shortly after the Omicron variant was discovered; South Africa, Nambia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Eswatini.
