Criminal Court sentences Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed to 23 years in jail for the attempted assassination of Parliament Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed on Tuesday.

An IED attached to a motorcycle was detonated on May 6, injuring Nasheed and several others. Adhuham was involved in assembling the IED, in addition to attaching it on the motorcycle and then detonating it.

Four charges were pressed against Adhuham. He had confessed and pleaded guilty to all four of them.

As per the plea deal Adhuham had agreed to, for 23 years, six months and nine days jail term.

The time he has already spent detained will have to be deducted from his sentence. He was arrested in May.

Majority of the hearings in this case was conducted in secrecy. A panel of three judges presided over this case.

Several other people were also arrested over the attack on Nasheed. Their trials will be conducted separately.
