The 76th President of the United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid said on Sunday that the UN have failed to find a solution to the major issues the world is facing due to climate change.
In his opening remarks in the ongoing UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), Shahid said even though the necessary resources to mitigate climate change is available, not enough is being done. He noted that regardless of the clear cut answers to reduce climate change on a global scale.
“We have had decades to argue the facts about climate change, about the power of renewables, about the fine details of monitoring or cost-sharing,” Shahid said.
“Yet, we have still failed to act with the conviction and determination required.”
Even though this is difficuly to believe, Shahid noted that this was the truth. However, he said there was still sufficient time to change the situation by putting in real work. Climate change has been the most talked issue since he assumed presidency of the UNGA, he said.
Shahid organized a meeting at the United Nations on Tuesday to seek the attention of governments on this issue. Shahid said that the participants of the meeting also spoke about the same thing.
“While the intensity of their tones varied, their messages were one and the same: the urgency of keeping within the 1.5 degrees target; the need to support vulnerable populations; the irresponsibility of not capitalizing on technological innovations; and the importance of empowering women and youth.”
Shahid pledged then to deliver these remarks to countries in Glasgow.
Elaborating on the solutions to the issue of climate change, Shahid said renewable energy technology is now the cheapest technology. He also called for increased efforts to ensure that such technology is available to all countries.
