Tourism Ministry said they received only one valid proposal in the bidding for islands to develop tourist resorts.
The ministry had opened bidding for 16 islands that were to be developed into resorts in April. While they had received 13 proposals for seven islands, only the proposal from Pearl Sands of Maldives was accepted. Parliament member for Kinbidhoo constituency Mohamed Nashid has stake in this company.
As the other 12 proposals did not fit the preset conditions, they were disqualified.
Pearl Sands of Maldives had applied to develop Haa Alifu Velifinolhu.
Tourism Ministry said they will announce more islands to be developed in October as well.
The bidding for the islands were opened at lower rates this year, with a notable discount of 30 percent on the acquisition cost. Several foreign companies had also applied to develop resorts.
