Maldives undecided on recognising Taliban

The Maldivian government has not yet made a decision on accepting the Taliban, who have taken over the Afghanistan government after USA troops withdrawal from the nation.

USA has had their army in Afghanistan for 20 years but shortly after their withdrawal Taliban gained the control and toppled the government on Sunday. President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani had fled the nation and the Presidential Palace is now under Taliban control.

An official from the Maldivian government told Mihaaru that the government has not yet made a decision on Taliban governance in Afghanistan. He did not disclose any more details.

Afghanistan is a member of South Asian for Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC), alongside Maldives. SAARC has yet to make a statement whether they will accept the Taliban governance in Afghanistan as well.

Since Taliban has assumed control, Afghans have been attempting to leave the nation. Due to overcrowding and clashes within the airports, all flights out of the country has been distrupted.

US military invaded Afghanistan and removed Taliban from the power after the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, leading to the Taliban to lose control of the nation

USA withdrew their troops from Afghanistan after an agreement was made between USA and the Taliban. As their troops withdrew, Taliban claimed more Afghanistan territory. Taliban gained control of Afghanistan's capital Kabul without much difficulty.
