Man accused of threatening to explode the Indian High Commission has been arrested on Saturday evening.
Police had stated via press release they had arrested a 42 year old Maldivian man. This case is being investigated by Serious and Organised Crime Department.
Even though police had not revealed who was arrested, Mihaaru news had determined the man arrested was Mohamed Inad, a member ruling MDP and had contested in parliament primary of the party in 2019.
He tweeted via an account called "Royal Hassan Thakuru" where he said he required RDX in order to cause the explosion in the Indian High Commission and that it would be done soon. RDX is a base used in military explosives.
That twitter account was suspended shortly afterwards.
Following the threat, the security provided to the Indian High Commission and the Chinese Embassy has been strengthened.
Police had reminded that it is a criminal offense to incite hate towards people, institutions via social media or other platforms. Encouraging property damage is a punishable offense as well. They stated that they would investigate such cases and take required action.
They said it is their responsibility to ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel in Maldives, and expressed concern over certain online media that had been publishing news and other content that creates a "hostile" environment.
