The Parliament has requested Maldivian Media Council (MMC) to look into the "hostile" articles published by the Maldivian media regarding the Indian High Commission and their diplomatic staff.
MMC said they have received a letter from the Parliament requesting to investigate. No further details revealed yet.
Indian High Commission had also sent a letter last Thursday to Foreign Ministry, stating certain Maldivian media had been publishing malicious and increasingly personal articles regarding the Indian High Commissioner and their personnel.
They had asked certain MMC to investigate these cases and take action as per the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which was signed in 1961. Article 29 of the Convention states the receiving state should treat a diplomatic personnel with “due respect and shall take all appropriate steps to prevent any attack on his person, freedom or dignity”.
The Indian High Commission accused in their letter that the targeted attacks by certain media and social media incites hatred towards them. The Commission requests two major action to be taken against them.
First, they request the protection provided for Indian High Commission to be strengthened. Then they have requested the media inciting hatred against them be taken the appropriate action as per the Maldivian laws in addition to international laws as well.
It is not yet clear which medias India has accused in the letter they addressed to the Foreign Ministry.
Recently, the diplomatic relationship between India and Maldives have been heavily criticised from Maldivians. An ongoing social media campaign often trends the hashtag "IndiaOut," opposing the Indian military presence in Maldives.
