Local Government Authority (LGA) decided on Tuesday that the newly elected Council members will take their oath on May 17.

On April 10, Maldives held the Local Council Election and the Women's Development Committee Elections across the country.

LGA had announced that they will be having the oath taking ceremony virtually as the COVID-19 numbers keep increasing.

The most number of seats won in the local election was by MDP, the leading party in the current administration's coalition. While they won 400 seats, opposition PPM won 325 seats.

Jumhooree Party ran for 115 seats and had won 23 seats while Adhaalath party won 11 of the 28 parties they contested for. MDA won 16 seats. The ran for only 20 seats.

Out of the over 600 candidates that campaigned independently, 173 of them won seats.

The most unexpected results were brought by Male City Council. The council had almost always had MDP majority. However, out of the 19 seats, PPM won 12 seats, including the mayoral seat as well.
