One of three minors who were injured in a dangerous accident at Laamu atoll Kalaidhoo island late Saturday was pronounced brain dead by Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on Monday.

The accident occurred in the middle of the night on Saturday while three boys were out riding motorcycles on Kalaidhoo island’s main road. According to the island council, two of the boys aged thirteen did not suffer serious injuries. However, the third boy aged fourteen has been undergoing treatment at IGMH in capital Male since late Sunday.

The director of the hospital’s Media Department, Ahmed Mausoom, stated that doctors have given up hope for his recovery.

“He has suffered brain death and is currently on the ventilator,” reported Mausoom.

Kalaidhoo Island Council’s Deputy President Hussain Khaleel explained that the boys were believed to have been each riding a motorcycle.

“We believe the accident occurred when two of the motorbikes collided.”
