Jailed opposition lawmaker Ahmed Mahloof’s family has expressed concerns over the delay in his case's appeal process.

According to Mahloof’s wife Nazra Naseem, Correctional Services informed them that Mahlood has completed his six month jail sentence. However, Nazra noted that the appeal process has not yet begun, which hinders the chance of getting justice for Mahloof.

“We are concerned that his trial has not yet begun, without any justification.”

Charged with obstructing police officers during an opposition protest, Mahloof is sentenced to jail for 10 months and 24 days for his two cases. He has already completed the jail term of the first case and is now serving a sentence of four months and 24 days.

Furthermore, Nazra accused Correctional Services of violating Mahloof’s rights as the completion date of his trial was misinformed.

“The actual date is June 3, but Correctional Services has counted February as a month of 31, hence the end date is mentioned as June 6.”

Nazra has already filed the issue at the National Integrity Commission.

It is noteworthy that Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) has raised concerns over the health of the lawmaker and has recommended the Maldives government to change his sentence to house arrest.
