The Criminal Court, on Thursday, remanded the eight suspects arrested over an attempted terrorist attack at Thimarafushi, Thaa Atoll, till the end of trial.
All of the suspects are accused of constructing a bomb and attempting to detonate it in Thimarafushi, learning military training on an inhabited island, and conducting classes in several households in Thimarafushi in support of extremist ideologies.
They are charged with planning an act of terrorism, possessing documents that prove they support a terrorist organisation, and encouraging acts of terrorism.
Some of them are also additionally charged with being a member of a terrorist organisation, trying to depart to warzones, possessing pornographic material and property damage.
In the remand hearing held on Thursday, the court ruled against releasing the suspects on the ground that they may pose a danger to society.
Maldives Police Service had formerly revealed that some of the accused are linked to international terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS) and they had planned to bomb Thimarafushi School’s laboratory.
