Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed announced that a bill will soon be submitted to the parliament endorsing strict actions against people who smuggle alcoholic substances into the Maldives.

At the inauguration ceremony of World Customs Day and Asycuda World, Home Minister Azleen said that one main success story of Maldives Customs Service is its support and efforts to prevent youth from abusing drugs.

Minister Azleen also mentioned that it is a serious issue to not have alcoholic substances mentioned in the Drugs Act. He declared that alcoholic substances cannot be accepted in the society, announcing that 23,000 bottles of alcohol have been seized with the help of Customs.

Noting that foreigners also bring along alcoholic substances when visiting the archipelago, Minister Azleen said that a special bill on alcoholic substances is currently underway and will be sent to parliament during this year's first session.

Azleen noted that the gateway audit has helped to seize a lot of illegal alcoholic substances, adding that such a gateway should be established in ports as well.

During the ceremony, 13 staff of Customs were awarded World Custom Associations Merit certificates and staff who have served in the institution for over 20 years were presented recognition awards.

Asycuda World inaugurated by Customs is a computerized customs management system which covers most foreign trade procedures. The system handles manifests and customs declarations, accounting procedures, transit and suspense procedures. It also generates trade data that can be used for statistical economic analysis.
