The Criminal Court on Wednesday ordered to remand the car driver, who is indicted over killing a young woman in an accident that occurred in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale last year, until the end of his trial.
The accident took place last September during which the speeding car had collided with a motorbike from behind. Fathimath Shiuna, 28, of Raa atoll Rasgatheemu island had been on the back seat of the motorcycle. She died while being treated at the main hospital in capital Male.
The driver of the car, Ahmed Maldhan Ali, is being charged over killing a person due to negligence as stated under Subject 112 of the Penal Code.
His trials commenced Wednesday and the state had requested the Criminal Court to detail Maldhan until the end of his trials.
While Maldhan had pleaded for leniency in detention, saying that he is the only male in his family and that he has already been remanded several times after his arrest, the Criminal Court had ruled in favour of the state. Judge Adam Arid presiding over the case stated that his circumstances do not necessitate a release and ordered his detention on grounds of preventing danger to society and influencing witnesses.
Should the charges against Maldhan be proven, he faces up to maximum four years in jail.
