The Maldives will commence a fundraising campaign to aid displaced Syrians next Saturday.
A number of volunteers are expected to take part in the event, which aims to raise funds by selling cupcakes.
Speaking about the event, the founder of Cake Donors Aishath Sherin said that this fundraiser will be a larger event compared to others they have taken part in. She noted that an estimated number of 400 volunteers will participate from capital Male and the suburbs of Hulhumale and Villimale during the campaign.
“More volunteers are welcome to join the event,” said Sherin.
She added that apart from cupcakes, goods can also be donated for the campaign. Fund boxes will also be placed at various locations, aiming to gather more people to donate money. Officials of the event said items such as canned fish will be bought from the money raised through the campaign.
According to Sherin, the campaign will run till the end of February while the amount of money raised per day will be announced daily. Sherin noted that throughout the campaign, transparency will be given the highest priority.
The items received from the campaign will be donated to Syria through the International Aid Campaign.
