Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), on Thursday, revealed that 72 cases of violations related to persons with disabilities were lodged at the commission.
According to HRCM, the violations include abuse and negligence from family, requests to take persons with disability into state care and complaints on misuse of disability allowance.
Moreover, the commission added that cases of neglect by the state and cases related to death of persons with disabilities under state care was reported as well.
In a statement released on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2020, HRCM emphasised the necessity of protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, increase their participation indecision making and establishing a system to facilitate easy access to public services and public places.
HRCM urged the state to ensure accessibility in travel and transport services and information, as well as the inclusion of people with disabilities in planning and development of infrastructure in the cities and rural islands, which will in turn support the achievement Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.
"Importantly, the commission urges the state to ensure the rights of persons at the Home for People with Special Needs (HPSN) and implement its recommendations for improvement".
Noting that the financial allowance provided for persons with disabilities is not sufficient in meeting their needs, HRMC emphasised the need to raise the allowance to a level that would help them live a dignified life.
The commission also called for urgent action by relevant authorities to compile a national database on persons with disabilities.
All of the points raised by the Human Rights Commission highlighted the theme of this year's theme for the Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is "Building back better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World".
The day has been commemorated worldwide since 1992, with the aim of promoting and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities as well as towards mobilising support in every aspect of society.
