Sri Lanka's Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) in collaboration with the Addu Women’s Association (AWA) successfully concluded a workshop on investigative journalism.

Over 25 Maldivian journalists from media outlets and TV stations, as well as employees of independent institutions participated in the intensive five-day workshop which commenced on November 13.

Conducted virtually over Zoom, session topics included journalism ethics, fundamentals of investigative reporting, public service journalism and fact-checking. The panel of senior mentors for the workshop included CIR Executive Director Dilrukshi Handunnetti and CEO of Nepal Investigative Multimedia Journalism Network (NIMJN), Rajneesh Bhandari.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, former Minister of Health Dr Mariyam Shakeela stressed the importance of investigative journalism in Maldives and expressed eagerness to see the work publicized by participants in the future.

According to CIR, the workshop was intended "to create a core group of well-trained journalists able to undertake investigative reporting, counter disinformation, and promote collaborative journalism in the Maldives".

The initiative was also supported by the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
