Maldives United Opposition (MUO) slammed the Elections Commission on Wednesday, declaring if the commission is truly independent and unbiased, MUO will surely win the upcoming Local Council Elections with a huge difference.

Speaking at a press conference held by MUO, its Shadow Cabinet’s Minister of Tourism and Guest House Maleeh Jamal urged the public to vote for MUO’s candidates to halt the "torture" of the current government.

Declaring that currently there are no independent institutions, he said that MUO aims to free institutions from any such influence and allow a free and fair election.

“Our independent institutions are asleep, but MUO aims to bring a free and fair election."

Moreover, the Shadow Cabinet's Minister of Health Shidhatha Shareef stated that Adhaalath Party, the coalition partner of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in MUO, has withdrawn from the elections due to the lack of a free and fair environment. She expressed confidence that Adhaalath Party will back MUO nonetheless.

Adhaalath Party announced that they will boycott the upcoming Local Council Elections late Monday, declaring that the recent actions of the Elections Commission indicate bias towards ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and that the party refuses to take part in such an election.

Describing the act as a backward step, Shidhatha said Adhaalath Party will support MDP in the elections.
