President Solih sends condolences over Bahrain PM's death

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Thursday, sent a message of condolence to King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, following the death of the country's Prime Minister, Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

Expressing his condolences on behalf of the Maldivian government and the citizens, the president stated that "his Royal Highness’s long and eventful tenure will be fondly remembered by the people of Bahrain and the global community, in light of the late prince’s able statesmanship and skilled diplomacy".

In his message, President Solih also expressed hope for the continued strength of the bilateral ties between Maldives and Bahrain.

According to Bahraini news outlets, Prime Minister Khalifa passed away on Wednesday morning while undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in the US. He was 84 years old at the time of his death.

Since assuming office in August 1971 immediately after Bahrain declared independence from Britain, Prime Minister Khalifa served as the country's only premier.
