Election Commission (EC)'s President Ahmed Shareef, on Tuesday, revealed that the electoral watchdog no longer wished to dissolve Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) as the issues surrounding the party have been resolved.

According to the Political Parties Act, the commission is granted the authority to dissolve a political party should they violate certain guidelines, including a failure to conduct a partywide congress.

However, in order to dissolve a party, EC must file the matter at the High Court.

Speaking to local media Mihaaru, EC President Shareef noted that DRP had submitted the required documents prior to the issue being filed at court.

Earlier in September, the commission had met with DRP and its senior representatives, expressing concerns over the party's conduct, noting that the last recorded congress of the party was held in 2013.

During the meeting, its current leader and parliamentary representative for Kaafu Atoll's Kaashidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Jabir noted that certain documents went missing amid the contentious changes to its leadership during the past few years.

According to Shareef, documents disclosed by DRP indicate that its last congress was held in 2017.

DRP was founded by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Following the rise of conflicting opinions among its leadership, Gayoom and several senior members had left the party, which at the time faced financial difficulties with several payments owed to various entities.
