Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Monday, suspended Chief Magistrate Ahmed Shukoor of Gaafu Alif Atoll's Maamendhoo Magistrate Court.

The magistrate was suspended for a period of 60 days over allegations of corruption and gross misconduct.

JSC is currently investigating claims that Shukoor met with the attorney of an individual with close ties to Shukoor prior to their remand hearing, as well as publicly endorsing a presidential candidate during the previous elections.

Furthermore, JSC identified that Shukoor had, in an out of court meeting, informed Maldives Police Service of a decision he would later take in relation to a remand hearing for suspects facing charges of terrorism in 2018.

Additional issues allegedly perpetrated by Magistrate Shukoor are also under investigation, with JSC filing for his dismissal at Parliament.

According to the Constitution, judges can only be removed by a two-third majority vote of all the members present in a parliament session, based on a submission by JSC, which is tasked with the responsibility of investigating and taking measures against problematic judges.
