Maldives Police Service, on Sunday, confirmed that five arrests were made in the protests held in capital Male' against sexual assault lead by child rights NGO Voice of Children (VOC).
According to police, the two males and three females were arrested on Majeedhee Magu for violating the Health Protection Agency (HPA)'s guidelines.
The police Spokesperson further added that authorities repeatedly advised the protesters before taking them into police custody for disobedience.
Although police confirmed only five arrests, a tweet by Voice of Maldives' official account stated that all of their protesters had been taken into custody.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, HPA only allows gatherings of five people or less, in addition to mandating individuals to wear masks and maintain social distancing in public.
