The National Working Group to increase women's participation in information and communications technology (ICT) sectors was inaugurated on Tuesday.

Speaking during the virtual ceremony, Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal expressed the necessity of efforts to increase women's contribution to ICT sectors and iterated that the ministry would offer full cooperation to such endeavours.

Formed on July 20, the seven-member working group is intended to serve an advisory role concerning policymaking efforts regarding ICT as well as empowering women in the sector.

According to the communications ministry, individuals that received the highest points among applicants were chosen as members of the working group.

Representatives of institutions and sectors included in the working group

- Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology: Deputy Minister Fathmath Shaheedha

- Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services: Assistant Director Mahfooz Waleedh

- Office of the Chief Technology Officer: Deputy Director General Shazna Ali

- Organizations promoting women in ICT: Aminath Firshana from Women in Tech

- Engineering: Azraar

- Technology: Hafzath Ali

- Science: Fathmath Niztharan

Hafzath Ali highlighted the comparatively low number of women in the ICT sector, as well as obstacles faces by such individuals, during her speech in the inauguration ceremony. She went on to express satisfaction concerning the government's initiative in cultivating progress within ICT fields.

Increasing female participation in ICT sectors was among President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's electoral pledges.
