Police arrest 14 suspects, seize 98 kg of drugs in Addu's special operation

Maldives Police Service, on Sunday, arrested 14 individuals, aged between 23 and 40, in a special drug operation ongoing in Addu Atoll.

Police are conducting the collaborative effort at sea with the Drug Enforcement Department (DED), Marine Police and Special Operation officers from the South Police Division, based on information provided by police intelligence.

Police have seized approximately 98.6 kilograms of drugs, including MDMA, amphetamines and heroin, in the operation which commenced on October 1.

According to police intel, Abdulla Ibrahim, aged 33, had plans to smuggle a large amount of illegal narcotics via a sea route.

Abdulla Ibrahim, suspected of masterminding the smuggling, was released by Criminal Court on September 30, 2019, after the state had pressed drug trafficking charges against him. Moreover, he also has a criminal record of smuggling drugs in addition to other convictions.

Hithadhoo's Magistrate Court has now remanded Abdulla Ibrahim, along with Mohamed Yameen Naseer, till the end of trial.

The remaining 12 suspects were remanded for a period of five days each.

Police revealed that the information uncovered in the ongoing operation was shared with international parties to clarify any connections to foreign sources.

Authorities are currently inspecting areas of Addu City as part of the ongoing operation.
