Two companies under the Lily Group, Lily Enterprises and Lily Shipping and Trading, donated 100,000 face masks to schools on Monday.

According to the companies, the aid was extended in support of Maldives' COVID-19 response, with the aim of curbing the spread of the virus among school children.

Experts state that the best preventive measure for the virus is maintaining social distancing measures and practicing personal hygiene. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised that regular hand washing and the use of face masks in public are necessary precautions.

Schools in the Greater Male' area are currently shut down due to the uncontrolled spread of the virus in the capital region. However, students outside the capital continue to attend school, in adherence to HPA guidelines.

During the last month, authorities tightened the safety measures implemented in the Greater Male' region, following an alarming upsurge of COVID-19 cases after the state initiated efforts to steer the country towards a 'new normal' with the phased easing of lockdown restrictions.

Authorities have stated that the effects of implementing stricter measures will be reflected in the case numbers towards the end of the month.

As one of the most densely populated cities in the world, Maldives' capital Malé continues to record a significant number of COVID-19 cases, similar to the first weeks following the first confirmed local transmission on April 15.

Maldives currently records a total of 9,173 virus cases, out of which 1,808 are active cases, as well as 7,326 recoveries and 33 deaths.

In addition to the Greater Male' region, active virus cases are currently present in 25 inhabited islands as well as 32 resorts across the archipelago
