President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday appointed three new members to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
He presented Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq, Moomina Waheed and Dr Ahmed Adham Abdulla with their letters of appointment at a ceremony held at the President's Office.
The new HRCM members' oaths of office were administered by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Ahmed Muthasim Adnan.
Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq had previously served as the Acting Secretary-General of HRCM and most recently as the commission's Director of Research and Monitoring. She holds a Master of Criminology from the University of Sydney, Australia.
Moomina Waheed was formerly the Human Resources Manager at Tree Top Hospital. Until her latest appointment, she served as a consultant on the delivery of the labour and employment mandate at the Ministry of Economic Development. She holds a Masters of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific) from the University of Sydney, Australia.
Dr Ahmed Adham Abdulla was previously a lecturer for Public International Law at Villa College. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Law (International Law) from the University of Wollongong, Australia. He was also conferred the President's Award for Achieving the Highest Academic Qualification, and the Australia Leadership Award.
The HRCM slots were left vacant after the parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender concluded last May that HRCM had failed to carry out their mandate and protect the rights of Maldivians.
Amid the committee's preparations to dismiss HRCM's members nearing the end of their five-year terms, the rights watchdog's then-President Aminath Eenas and members Aishath Afreen and Moosa Ali Kaleyfaan handed in their resignations in July. Then-Vice President Mohamed Zahid was dismissed from his position by the parliament later the same month, leaving only member Naiween Abdulla on the commission.
