President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Wednesday, ratified the first amendment bill to the Legal Profession Act (Act no. 5/2019).

The bill was passed by the Parliament at a session held on July 22.

The amendment mandates the Maldives Bar Council to formulate and conduct a month-long training programme for law graduates that remain unable to take the oaths of legal practice following the completion of a degree accepted by the Maldives Qualifications Authority.

A seven-day deadline from the date of ratification is allotted for the Bar to publicize a guideline on the programme's modules and assessment criteria. Subsequently, the training must begin within seven days after the guideline is published on the government's gazette.

The amendment to the Legal Profession Act was published in the gazette upon ratification and comes into effect immediately.
