ADK Trading and Shipping, on Monday, announced the completion of a PCR laboratory for conducting COVID-19 testing at Maafaru International Airport.

The project was contracted to ADK by luxury resort brand Soneva Hotels which provided funding for the initiative.

ADK stated that efforts to establish the facility, including procurement of equipment and infrastructure work, were completed within a 30-day period.

Soneva has repeatedly emphasized the importance of COVID-19 testing being made available on the premises due to Maafaru Airport's international status and impending plans to reopen Maldivian borders for tourists.

A considerable number of luxury resorts are located in Noonu Atoll.

Maafaru International Airport is the first Maldivian airport with an established PCR laboratory.

The Maldivian government is scheduled to reopen its borders and kickstart the tourism industry on July 15 after almost four months since halting the issuance of on-arrival travel visas.

While luxury resorts across the country are permitted to welcome guests starting from July 15 itself, guesthouses will be given clearance to resume operations in August.

The Tourism Ministry has revealed its goal of attracting 900,000 tourists to Maldives during the remaining months of 2020.
