Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) announced Sunday that more than half of the design and construction of coastal protection structures at Foddhoo, Noonu Atoll has been completed.

According to MTCC, the project progress is at 58 percent, with the current works focused on levelling the backfill area and geo bag filling for the construction of revetments.

Foddhoo's coastal protection project involves sand filtering works of 1,400cbm, sand filling for geo bags, and sand backfilling works of 5,000cbm. The geo bags will be placed along an area of 180 metres.

The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure awarded the MVR 7.6 million project to MTCC on February 25, 2020. It received the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Approval on March 18.

A period of 180 days has been allocated for the completion of the project.

At the time the project was awarded, Foddhoo Island Council's president Abdulla Shaamee expressed concerns to local media over increasing erosion, which he stated had not been a problem the island faced in the past.

According to Shaamee, the erosion encroached about 50 feet on the island's north and northeastern shores, including 30 feet into an inhabited area on the latter.
