Police investigate sexual assault of woman in quarantine

Maldives Police Service on Thursday began investigating allegations of sexual assault of a woman, who is currently quarantined at Filitheyo Island Resort.

Speaking at the daily virtual press conference held by the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC), Communications Undersecretary at the President's Office Mabrouq Abdul Azeez confirmed that the case was reported to both the police and Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services.

He disclosed that the suspect is the facility manager at the resort.

Mabrouq added that the authorities have contacted the victim's family regarding the case.

Police issued a brief statement assuring that the investigation was underway. No further details have been disclosed.
