Road Development Corporation (RDC), on Tuesday, recommenced 'Male' City Streetscaping Project' after disruptions caused by the local COVID-19 outbreak.

According to local media outlet Mihaaru, RDC Managing Director Moosa Ali Manik stated that renovation efforts were resumed due to the government's ongoing phased easing of restrictions following a one-month hiatus.

He assured that the corporation would prioritise employees' safety in the work environment.

Despite certain difficulties, he stated that lockdown measures enabled RDC to carry out their work conveniently and swiftly as the usually congested roads of the capital are currently empty.

The MVR 462 million project was contracted to RDC by the Male' City Council in January and was scheduled to be completed within two years and six months.

Moosa stated that discussions were ongoing to extend the original deadline due to delays caused by measures implemented over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The streetscaping project aims to address pressing urban issues faced by Male' City residents such as flooding. It proposes the redevelopment and enhancement of streets with improved design elements, including dedicated parking spaces for all wards, a pilot project on public transport, integration of underground network pipelines carrying essential utility services and stormwater management system.

For the project, 18 kilometres of roadway and pavement on 416 roads are to be renovated, in addition to the establishment of 21 new parking spaces. Renovated roads will be separated into four categories; arterial, city, secondary and neighbourhood pedestrian roads.
