The government on Tuesday, announced new board members appointed for Local Government Authority (LGA), the state institution regulating and overseeing the local governance system of the country.

The newly appointed members are Advisor to the President Mohamed Shihab, Minister at the President's Office Ahmed Sameer, Minister of State for Home Affairs Mohamed Mahir, Minister of State of Finance Ahmed Shareef, Deputy Minister of National Planning and Infrastructure Fathimath Niuma and LGA's Chief Executive Officer Fathimath Afshan Latheef,

The LGA board consists of a minister appointed by the President, a female member specialized in gender equality, a member of Civil Society, an individual with experience in governance or public administration and LGA’s Chief Executive Officer.

Formerly, the authority's board consisted of Minna Rasheed, Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmoodh, Amir Ali and Ahmed Hassan.

Minister of Foreign Affair Imran Abdulla still holds the position of LGA President, since President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appointed him for the post in December 2018.

As per the Decentralization Act, Minister Imran would answer to the parliament on behalf of LGA.

The President and Vice President of the board are usually appointed by a vote cast by the members. However, amendments to the Decentralization Act now authorizes the President to assign individuals for both positions.
