The former deputy of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Alhan Fahmy is seeking action from MDP’s Action Committee against seven lawmakers of the party that violated its whip-line to vote against passing the State Budget 2017.

In a letter to MDP on Monday, Alhan stated that MDP’s parliamentary group had last Thursday placed a redline whip to not approve the state budget for the coming year. He accused the following seven lawmakers of violating the whip-line.

Hulhuhenveiru MP and Deputy President of Parliament, Reeko Moosa Manik

Macchangolhi North MP Mariya Ahmed Didi

Maafannu West MP Mohamed Falaah

Komandoo MP Ahmed Nashid

Mulak MP Ibrahim Naseer

Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef

Hithadhoo Medhu MP Ibrahim Mohamed Didi

Alhan urged the committee to look into the matter under the party’s policy and requested a written confirmation of the committee accepting the matter.

Of the seven members, Moosa, Shareef and Didi had voted to pass the budget as approved by the parliamentary Budget Review Committee, while Mariya, Falaah, Nashid and Naseer had not been present on the parliament floor when the vote was put forward for the budget.

The state budget of MVR 26.8 billion for 2017 was approved by the parliament with a majority of 60 votes in favour, while 15 lawmakers had voted against and two remained neutral.

Meanwhile, Alhan was expelled from MDP by its disciplinary committee for acting in violation of party interests. While he has appealed the case at the court to reverse the decision, the Elections Commission had declared this Monday that Alhan, along with Moosa Manik who was MDP’s former chairperson, have been removed from the party’s registry.

Whereas an official of the EC stated that they have informed MDP of the updated register via a letter, the party’s Deputy Chairperson Ali Niyaz had replied that they had not received any such letter before the party’s office closed that day.

MDP had decided to expel Moosa from the party for violating its three-line whip to vote against reducing the number of judges of the Supreme Court in parliament.
