HPA orders closure of gyms, fitness centres in Male'

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Sunday, ordered the temporary closure of all gyms and fitness centres in the greater Male' region to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The order, issued under the state of public health emergency announced on March 12, will come into effect on 0000 hrs on March 30.

On March 16, the majority of gym owners based in the greater Male' area independently decided to temporarily close gyms and fitness centres in the capital until March 28. They finalised the decision during a meeting convened to discuss responsibilities and necessary steps to take in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

Maldives now has 17 confirmed and six active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 11 recoveries. While there are two confirmed cases of Maldivians, no local to local transmissions are recorded.

The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over 677, 000 people and claimed over 31,700 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 146, 300 people have recovered.
