The lower court has decided to commence trials of the lawsuit filed by Alhan Fahmy against his former party of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to elect a new leader and deputy after resolution talks failed between the plaintiff and defendants.

The former deputy of MDP, Alhan Fahmy had filed the lawsuit stating that the term of the current leader, Former President Mohamed Nasheed and his deputy leader Mohamed Shifaz, was up. Alhan has requested the Civil Court to mandate a new election.

Following the court’s Dispute Resolution Division’s failure to secure an agreement between Alhan and MDP leaders, the division decided last Wednesday to forward the case to the Civil Court’s trial division to solve the matter.

Meanwhile Alhan was expelled from MDP by its disciplinary committee for acting in violation of party interests.

While a lawsuit has been filed at the Civil Court regarding internal matters of the main opposition, the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s full control was also handed over from its leader to the party’s adviser through a court order.
