Male' City Council commenced assessing the residences and living conditions of expatriates in the capital city of Male' in relation to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
According to the City Council, the assessment efforts would concluded over the upcoming two days.
An official from the council stated that the assessment was aimed to identify the number of foreign nationals living in or using a certain residence and ensuring that efficient protective measures are implemented if an expatriate tests positive for the virus.
"The aim is to remain prepared for even the worst case scenario", the official stated.
Currently, there are thousands of expatriates in the capital city of Male', many of whom live in crowded conditions.
The government has expressed concern that containing the spread of the virus would be difficult if COVID-19 is diagnosed within such environments.
Maldives currently has 13 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including a tourist couple on a liveaboard, two cases from Anantara Dhigu, five foreign nationals from Kuredu Island Resort as well as two foreign citizens from Sandies Bathala and Kuramathi Maldives each. No locals have tested positive for the virus as of yet.
The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected more than 219,000 and claimed over 8,960 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 85,670 have recovered.
