Sri Lanka halted all arrivals to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Kantunayake, starting from Tuesday, March 17.

According to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's media division, incoming flights were banned starting from 0000 hours on March 17, till March 31.

The decision was made after President Gotabaya met with the country's National Operation Center, as a measure to control the spread of COVID-19.

In response to World Health Organization recognizing COVID-19 as a global pandemic, Sri Lanka's Civil Aviation Authority's Chairman G.A. Chandrasiri announced last week that passengers from Qatar, Bahrain and Canada will not be permitted to land in Sri Lanka for a period of two weeks.

Travel bans were imposed as part of measures to curtail the spread of the coronavirus in the country, he added.

Till date, Sri Lanka has recorded 44 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
