PG Shameem orders investigation over infected tourist

Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem, on Monday, ordered the police to launch an investigation into the permitted movement of the Italian tourist infected with COVID-19 that holidayed in Kuredu Island Resort and transited in the capital city of Male' for two days.

The investigation is intended to determine whether any negligence or misconduct was involved with the initial spread of the virus in Maldives.

Additionally the Ministry of Tourism is conducting an inquiry into the matter.

Speaking to local media outlet Mihaaru, Tourism Minister Ali Waheed asserted that any individual found guilty of neglect concerning the tourist's case would be penalized.

The guest in question tested positive for the virus after returning to Italy and subsequently informed Maldivian authorities.

The first confirmed cases of the virus were reported from Kuredu Island Resort on Saturday. Two additional individuals on the resort tested positive on Monday. Currently, the total number of cases has reached six, including two other positive cases on Sandies Bathala resort.

Furthermore, the government has quarantined 16 individuals in Male' after they came into contact with the infected Italian tourist.

Both resorts have now been placed under lockdown. There were 1,389 people on Kuredu Island Resort when it was quarantined following the virus outbreak, including 699 tourists, 270 local staff and 420 expatriate staff.

Including the guests at Sandies Bathala resort, there are 824 tourists quarantined in both resorts as well as local and foreign staff.
