The Elections Commission (EC), on Thursday, revealed that 14 resorts had requested the placement of ballot boxes for the Local Council Election slated for April 4.

EC opened applications for up to 53 resorts to request for ballot boxes with consideration to the number of resorts at which polling stations were established during the 2018 presidential election. The deadline for submitting applications is February 27.

Vice President of the electoral body, Ahmed Akram stated that the commission had received confirmation that additional resorts would submit applications before the end of the day.

According to EC's criteria, resorts must have a minimum voting population of 50 to be eligible to apply for a ballot box to be placed in the islands.

More than 540 ballot boxes will be placed for the local council elections, with 6,500 to 7,000 individuals working as observers and officials for the EC.

The April elections is the first local elections to be held following the major reforms brought to the decentralisation framework granting councils considerably more fiscal and political autonomy.

With the introduction of a landmark gender quota, of the total 980 councillors to be elected, a third of all council seats, or 327 of these seats will be allocated for female councillors.
