MDP ex-SG submits candidacy for Male' mayor

Anas Abdul Sattar, on Monday, submitted his application form to the Elections Commission (EC) to contest for the mayorship of capital city Male'.

The former Secretary General of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will represent the ruling party in the local council elections as well.

Anas secured an electoral victory over incumbent Male' mayor Shifa Mohamed by a margin of 200 votes during the internal primary held by MDP on January 31.

The MDP members contesting for the 19 constituencies in Male' for the local council election submitted candidacy forms to EC along with Anas.

Independent candidate and former Feydhoo MP Alhan Fahmy has also submitted his candidacy for the position of Male' Mayor.

Speaking at the MDP national congress held on February 11, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed guaranteed that Anas would win the election with 12,000 votes. Anas resigned as Secretary General after five years of serving in the post later the same day.

MDP, the leading member of the ruling coalition, announced plans to officially launch its campaign for the local council election on February 21. The conference held to mark the nationwide launching will be attended by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and MDP President Mohamed Nasheed.
