6 extremists arrested over Hulhumale stabbings: Police

Maldives Police Service revealed Thursday night that six suspects were arrested over the stabbings which occurred in Hulhumale' on February 4 and confirmed that they subscribe to extremist ideologies.

Head of serious and organised crime department Hassan Shifau revealed that one of the three foreigners attacked during the incident was discharged from the hospital. The remaining two victims are still under medical supervision.

The victims, two Chinese nationals and an Australian, were assaulted with knives near the Hulhumale Redbull Park Futsal Ground.

The police gave assurances that every individual that planned, perpetrated or assisted the attack would be tracked down and brought to justice.

Furthermore, he urged members of the public to refrain from sharing ‘terrorist videos’ on social media, highlighting that the new Anti-Terrorism Act criminalised such activity.

On Thursday night, a suspected group of extremists uploaded a video to social media taking responsibility for the attacks. A mask-clad man speaks to the camera in Dhivehi, the local language, while subtitles appear at the bottom of the video in English.

The police assured that they were in the process of establishing the validity of the video,
