United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 4.5 magnitude earthquake 47.2 miles off the coast of Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alif Atoll, in the early hours of Thursday.
Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) reported that the tremor was felt in the northern islands of Maldives at approximately 0147 hrs. The earthquake's epicentre was located 10 kilometres below the sea floor.
The seismometer at the Hanimaadhoo Meterorological Centre in Haa Dhaalu Atoll also detected the minor earthquake.
No injuries or damages to property were reported so far with MMS stating that such impacts are unlikely to occur.
