Ministry of Foreign Affairs cautioned Maldivians against non-essential travel to Kerala, India, after three individuals tested positive for the Novel Coronavirus in the state.

Kerala declared a state of calamity on Tuesday, following its third confirmed case. The foreign ministry urged Maldivians against travelling to Kerala unless absolutely necessary, for as long as the state of calamity is sustained.

Kerala is one of the top destinations among Maldivians to visit for medical purposes. All three individuals that tested positive for the virus were students who recently returned from Wuhan, the Chinese city in which the outbreak originated.

The foreign ministry advised all Maldivians residing in or travelling to India, to register at the ministry, the Maldivian High Commission, or the Maldivian Consulate General in Trivandrum. The ministry also urged Maldivians who are overseas, to abide by the instructions and advice of the authorities of their respective countries.

Following the spread of the coronavirus to several other countries, including those frequented by Maldivians for various reasons, the administration has urged Maldivians to register at their embassies as well.

Presently the number of fatalities from the virus has reached 492 while the number of confirmed infections tops 24,500.
