Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday night cautioned Maldivians against all non-essential travel to China and any other country with confirmed cases of the Novel Coronavirus.
In a press release, the ministry urged Maldivians travelling abroad to register at the resident Maldivian embassies or at the embassy closest to the traveller.
The ministry also advised Maldivians residing overseas to follow the instructions from the public health officials of their respective host countries.
In addition, the foreign ministry shared information regarding registration at embassies, which are also available on their websites.
The ministry released the travel advisory in the wake of Maldives' decision to halt direct flights to and from China on Thursday, which is part of the government's precautionary measures to prevent a Novel Coronavirus outbreak in the country.
The administration has established thermal screening cameras in all airports across the archipelago to detect suspect cases, as well as a 'situation monitoring unit' and help desk at Velana International Airport.
Although the government also announced that isolation facilities have been prepared, Ministry of Health has stated that samples from suspected cases would have to be tested at Pune, India, as Maldives currently lacks the equipment to conduct tests.
The deadly virus, which originated from Wuhan City in the Hubei Province of China in December 2019, has claimed over 170 lives nationwide, while the number of confirmed infections have reached over 7, 700 across the world.
