Main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on Monday announced the decision to host its local council primary elections on February 7.

During the press conference held at the PPM campaign office, Spokesperson Heena Waleed noted that 1,146 candidates in 51 islands across 14 atolls, including the four cities, have submitted their applications to determine recipients of the party ticket.

"Primaries will be held on February 7, Friday. We are looking at sometime in the afternoon. We will notify the candidates once the timings are finalized", said Heena, adding that arrangements have been made to place ballot boxes in the islands.

She further noted that all candidates must appoint themselves a representative for the election.

Former Madaveli MP and PPM Election Committee Member Muaz Mohamed Rasheed said that a majority of issues related to the voters' list were of party members losing their membership status from PPM's registry without prior knowledge. Muaz noted that efforts are underway to amend the list.
