A director at the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services is temporarily tasked with running the state orphanage, 'Kudakudhinge Hiyaa', located at suburb Vilimale', after the orphanage's former CEO was relieved of his duties.
Gender Ministry's Communication Director Ibrahim Mohamed confirmed on Monday that the orphanage is currently being operated under a director at the ministry. However, the individual's name was not revealed under the ministry policy to protect the anonymity of their employees.
Former CEO of 'Kudakudhinge Hiyaa' Abdul Shukoor Abdul Hakeem was relieved of his duties last week in relation to an ongoing investigation by the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).
HRCM has yet to reveal any details of the investigation.
The state orphanage in Vilimale' provides accommodation for minors above 13 years of age. Children below 13 are housed at 'Fiyavathi' located in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale'.
The government assumes responsibility for children and transfers them under state care if there is no possibility of providing a safe environment for the children with their parents or extended families.
