Funadhoo airport to open on February 1

Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, on Thursday, announced that the domestic airport in Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll would be inaugurated on February 1.

The airport, developed by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, (MTCC) was initially scheduled to open in August 2019.

Minister of State for Transport and Civil Aviation, Ahmed Zuhair stated that final preparations were underway to commence operations at Funadhoo Airport. He added that a test flight would be conducted shortly.

The national carrier, Maldivian, will commence flights to Funadhoo upon the airport's inauguration.

According to the transport ministry, airports in Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll, Madivaru, Lhaviyani Atoll and Maavaarulu, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll will commence operations within 2020.

Construction work on the airports in Funadhoo, Madivaru and Maavaarulu began in 2018 during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
